Who is CETech for?

Manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers placing consumer goods onto the EU market have an obligation to comply with EU trading legislation.

Responsibilities when own branding

Importers and retailers placing a product on the EU market under their brand name assume the same responsibilities as the manufacturer under the European Union’s legislative framework for consumer products. For example, a retailer importing an electrical product and marketing under an own brand carries the full responsibility for the compliance of the product with EU legislation.

Technical File Maintenance

The compilation of a technical file is an obligation under various EU Directives for consumer products. The file is a systematic assembly of information on the design and production phases of the product, including verification. It should contain evidence that the product was considered to pose a tolerable risk at the point of marketing.

Once the product is on the market the file will need to be regularly reviewed and updated in the light of new information. It would be difficult to conclude at a later date that a product is compliant without a technical file and an up-to-date risk assessment.

The main components of a technical file are as follows:

  • Test Reports
  • EC Declaration of Conformity
  • Certificates
  • Conceptual Designs
  • Manufacturer Drawings
  • Sub Assemblies and Circuit Diagrams
  • User Manuals
  • Risk Assessment
